Expanded WIC Options for Canned Food
Recent changes to the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC) food packages will provide moms and kids with the opportunity to select all forms of fruits and vegetables, including nutritious and convenient canned fruits and vegetables as part of their food packages. In addition, canned fish and juice are also included in some food packages. Visit the CFA’s Expanded WIC Options for Canned Food page for more information on the WIC Food Packages.
Canned Tomatoes Safe to Eat
Because of the high heat used during the commercial canning process, there is no risk of salmonella contamination in canned tomatoes or any other canned food products. Canned tomatoes also are quite versatile and can be used in a variety of dishes including salsas, salads and other favorite recipes. Among the best sources of lycopene, they deliver a higher concentration of the antioxidant than their fresh, cooked counterpart. Click here to learn more about the safety and many other benefits of eating canned tomatoes.
