A new Michigan State University (MSU) study published in the
American Journal of Lifestyle Medicine shows canned foods
deliver on nutrition, affordability and safety. With continued
emphasis on the importance of increasing fruit and vegetable
consumption, the study revealed that canned foods provide a tasty,
nutritious and affordable means to conveniently incorporate fruits
and vegetables into the daily diet, regardless of geography or

As part of the MyPlate National Strategic Partner network, the
Canned Food Alliance is excited to have joined together with five
partners to create the "Meeting Your MyPlate Goals on a Budget"
Toolkit. The resource guide is filled with tips on making healthy,

The Canned Food Alliance commends Congress on passage of a
five-year Farm Bill that includes an "all forms" pilot program for
the Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program. This enables schools to
offer a variety of fruits and vegetables - canned, fresh, frozen or
dried - in the snack program and ensures children have more ways to
get the critical nutrients they need to meet USDA Dietary

A survey commissioned by the Canned Food Alliance finds
Americans enjoy the many benefits of canned foods, including
convenience, value and ease of preparation. However, contrary to
USDA dietary recommendations and decades of nutrition science,
consumers have misperceptions about the nutrition of canned foods.

New research from Oregon State University provides further
evidence to support the Canned Food Alliance's efforts to promote
the nutritional benefits of canned foods, in addition to
convenience and accessibility. This study shows canned peaches can
provide comparable nutrient levels as fresh peaches, meaning
consumers can enjoy peaches year round without worrying about loss
of nutrients in their diet. Click

Canned foods have long been touted
for the ease and convenience they bring to the kitchen. Less
well-known is the fact that canned foods offer comparable nutrition
as other forms, often for a lower cost. A new study published in
the Journal of Nutrition and Food Sciences, May 2012, found that
not only are most canned foods less expensive than their fresh,
frozen and dried counterparts, but many also offer a more
convenient way to get much-needed nutrients. Click

Continues to be the Most Recycled Material in North
Recycling Institute (SRI) announced that the 2010 recycling rate
for North America's most recycled material - steel - is 88 percent.
That includes good news for the recycling rate for steel cans,
which increased to 67.1% in 2010 from 66.8% in 2009. View the full

CFA Named National
Strategic Partner by the USDA
The Canned Food
Alliance (CFA) has been named as a National Strategic Partner by
the U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) Center for Nutrition
Policy and Promotion (CNPP). National Strategic Partners support
the mission of the USDA CNPP to promote the 2010 US Dietary
Guidelines and MyPlate icon.
CFA was selected as a partner because we:
a health mandate consistent with the Dietary Guidelines for
Americans and the mission of the USDA CNPP
Promote nutrition in the context of the
entirety of the Dietary Guidelines for Americans
disseminate CNPP's Dietary Guidelines messages
participate in CNPP sessions to develop and execute a joint
strategic nutrition promotion plan annually

MyPlate," and will continue to work with
the USDA to educate Americans about the nutritious, affordable and

Department of Agriculture (USDA) has unveiled its new food guide
icon - MyPlate. MyPlate encapsulates the recently released
2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans in a retainable and
easy-to-understand symbol showing the proper proportions of the
various food groups depicted on a plate. The Canned Food
Alliance looks forward to partnering with the USDA and others to
help educate Americans on how to use MyPlate to create balanced
