September is Fruits & Veggies More Matters Month - an annual celebration of the bounty available to us all.  Won't you join me in promoting the countless benefits of all forms of fruits and vegetables to your family, friends and clients?  To make it easy, PBH has developed a toolkit filled with easy-to-use materials, including ad slicks, sample social media posts, tweets and memes, and a calendar outlining a daily fruit/vegetable we will be highlighting on our social media platforms.

A few of my favorite canned food tips from the kit include:

  • Mix canned beans into your salads for extra protein & add canned fruit to gelatin for extra texture, flavor and color.
  • Use canned fruit as a salsa for fish, chicken and pork.
  • Add canned vegetables to rice for a tasty side dish.
  • Waste not want not.  Canned fruits and vegetables are non-perishable, so you waste less food and cash.

The best way to ensure you are getting your daily requirement of fruits and vegetables is to incorporate all forms - canned, fresh, frozen, dried and 100% juice - into meal planning.  This is easy to do given the myriad variety, tastes and textures available at the local grocery store or market.  I hope you will join me this month in trying something new - whether it is sampling a fruit or vegetable variety you have never tasted, experimenting with a new way of preparing a trusted stand-by, or broadening your use of different forms of fruits and vegetables as you cook.  You might just find a new favorite or two!
