May is National Salsa Month! Did you know salsa actually means “sauce” in Spanish? So while Americans typically think of salsa as a tomato-based partner to tortilla chips, it can also refer to an infinite variety of chunky sauces served alongside or on top of fish or meat, or as a dip for everything from chips to crudité and more. Canned ingredients, when paired with fresh foods and/or herbs, make preparing tasty salsas quick and easy. Put your own creative twist on salsa, or check out a few of our favorites:
Try figs in salads, desserts and fruit salsas - or as a fruit
garnish. They tempt the palate with more than their trendy flavor;
their small edible seeds also deliver fiber. Although fresh figs
have a limited season, you can enjoy figs any time of the year;
simply keep canned figs on your pantry shelf.
