CFA Commends USDA on New School Meal Standards
The Canned Food Alliance (CFA) commends the United States Department of Agriculture's (USDA) new and improved nutrition standards for school meals that will address the need for better nutrition for our nation's school children. As a National Strategic Partner of the USDA's Center for Nutrition Policy and Promotion, the CFA supports the new guidelines that will increase the amount and variety of fruits and vegetables provided in school lunch programs.
Canned foods are uniquely positioned to help make these new guidelines a reality in school cafeterias. Canned foods provide important nutrients most Americans (including children) are lacking, consistent quality, year-round availability and a longer shelf life, which can also minimize waste and costs.
Some key points about canned food:
Canned fruits and vegetables are picked and packed at the peak of freshness and deliver key nutrients
Canned beans and legumes do not require extensive preparation time or additional staff training on preparation techniques
Today there are more great-tasting, nutritious canned foods available in no salt added, low sodium and reduced sodium options than ever before
Canned meats, seafood and beans offer convenient and affordable sources of protein to meet nutrient requirements
The CFA will continue to work closely with the USDA and industry partners to ensure that canned foods continue to offer a healthy and affordable solution for schools to effectively implement these new guidelines and deliver nutritious meals for our nation's children.
